What to Expect During Behind-the-Wheel Training in Northern Virginia

Behind-the-wheel training turns classroom concepts into decisions you make in traffic. In Virginia, the in-car portion of driver education is separate from classroom instruction. Before choosing a program, check the course requirements, bring the documents it asks for, and arrive ready to focus on safe, controlled practice.

Before your first session

Read the provider’s requirements and confirm that the course matches your age and goal. For Alpha’s under-18 program, students need a valid Virginia learner’s permit, the original DEC 1 card issued by their high school, and 45 hours of prior driving experience. Those are course-specific prerequisites; check the course page for current details.

Get a good night’s rest, wear shoes that let you feel the pedals, and bring any required paperwork. Tell the instructor about anything that may affect the session, such as limited experience, difficulty with a particular maneuver, or a question about the route.

What a session may cover

An instructor may begin by reviewing the vehicle controls and expectations, then guide you through low-speed control, turns, scanning, lane position, intersections, parking, and traffic decisions. The order depends on your skill level and the training plan. Observation periods are also useful: watch how the instructor scans, communicates, and chooses a safe position before a maneuver.

Make practice active

• Ask what skill you are working on before each drive.
• Use mirrors and scan ahead instead of focusing only on the space immediately in front.
• When a maneuver feels difficult, ask for a pause and a clear explanation.
• At the end, repeat the instructor’s feedback in your own words and note what to practice.

Understand what the course includes

Alpha’s Under-18 Behind The Wheel program is scheduled across seven days, with 50 minutes of driving and 50 minutes of observation each day; its course page says a Virginia road test is included. The course page also sets out the pickup area and prerequisites. Do not assume every school or package uses the same schedule or includes a road test.
