What to Expect During Behind-the-Wheel Training in Northern Virginia

If you've recently enrolled in behind-the-wheel training with Alpha Driving School, you might be wondering what exactly happens during your lessons. Whether you're navigating the busy intersections of Ashburn or the quiet residential streets of Aldie, here is a breakdown of what to expect during your in-car instruction.

State-Mandated Requirements

For teen drivers in Virginia, the behind-the-wheel curriculum requires 14 total periods of in-car instruction: 7 periods of actual driving and 7 periods of observation. Each period lasts 50 minutes. At Alpha Driving School, we typically schedule these as paired sessions spanning 7 days.

The Observation Phase

Observation is just as critical as driving. While seated in the back, you will actively observe another student driver. This allows you to witness traffic interactions, scanning techniques, and right-of-way negotiations without the immediate stress of operating the vehicle yourself.

Starting with the Basics

Your early driving sessions will take place in low-traffic environments, such as quiet neighborhoods or empty parking lots. Your instructor will focus on fundamental skills: proper hand positioning, smooth acceleration and braking, precise turning, and basic scanning for hazards.

Progressing to Complex Environments

As your confidence and skills grow, your instructor will guide you into more complex traffic situations. You will practice merging onto multi-lane roads, navigating busy intersections, handling roundabouts, and dealing with higher speed limits typical of Northern Virginia routes like Route 50 and Route 28.

Parking and Maneuvering

Specific maneuvers required by the Virginia DMV road test will be heavily practiced. This includes parallel parking, two-point and three-point turns, backing into parking spaces, and parking on hills. Your instructor will provide reference points to make these maneuvers simple and repeatable.

The Final Road Test

On your final day of instruction, you will take your official road skills test. Because Alpha Driving School is a DMV-licensed facility, our instructors are authorized to administer this test. If you pass, you will be issued a temporary provisional license, saving you from taking the test at a crowded DMV office.
