The instructor will provide behind-the-wheel driver training to Alpha Driving School students in accordance with Virginia DMV requirements and Alpha Driving School policies.

Compensation is based on qualifications and experience within the $30–$34 per paid instructional hour range.
How pay works
Straightforward scheduling and payroll.
- Practice lessons are 60-minute sessions and are paid as 1 instructional hour.
- For paired Behind-the-Wheel / Adult Waiver sessions, one student drives for 50 minutes while another student completes the required observation period.
- For payroll purposes, Alpha treats each paired 100-minute student/observation session as 2 paid instructional hours.
- Example: 7 paired sessions for two students equal 14 paid instructional hours: $420 at $30/hour, $448 at $32/hour, or $476 at $34/hour.
- These examples explain the compensation structure and are not guaranteed weekly or monthly earnings.
- This structure is intended to make scheduling and payroll straightforward for instructors.
Vehicle and insurance
An instructor-owned vehicle can be part of the arrangement.
Alpha Driving School does not necessarily have to purchase the instructor’s training vehicle. A qualified instructor may provide a personally owned vehicle if the lease, insurance, vehicle, and DMV requirements are satisfied.
The arrangement

DTS 005 details
For an instructor-owned vehicle formally leased to Alpha, the insurance company must complete the DTS 005 Vehicle Insurance Certification. The arrangement should identify:

Virginia DMV requirements
The licensing and safety standards come first.
Candidates must meet the applicable Virginia DMV Class B instructor requirements. Alpha confirms the current requirements during the qualification review rather than relying on outdated assumptions.
Virginia DMV Instructor Requirements
- Employment by a licensed Virginia driver training school.
- High school diploma or equivalent, a valid driver’s license, and at least five years of driving experience.
- A driving record with no more than 6 DMV demerit points.
- Submission of the Virginia DMV Class B Instructor License Application (DTS 34B), signed by the school owner or manager.
- A national criminal history record and the current DMV instructor application fee.
- One accepted instructor-qualification pathway, such as the required accredited college coursework, a Virginia teaching license with a driver-education endorsement, or an eligible law-enforcement pathway.
- Ability to communicate effectively in English with students and parents or guardians.
