Question 1

What is the In-Person Behind-the-Wheel course?

Accepted Answer

Professional driving instruction with a Virginia DMV-certified instructor. We cover structured routes, observation sessions, and hands-on driving. Available in Aldie, South Riding, Sterling, and throughout Northern VA.

Question 2

What online courses do you offer?

Accepted Answer

We offer online Driver Education, Driver Improvement, Driver's Manual, Re-Examination, and RADEP courses. Requirements and delivery differ by course; some require an in-person exam, proof of prior training, or court/DMV eligibility. Review each course page before enrolling.

Question 3

What is a Driver Improvement Clinic?

Accepted Answer

A Virginia DMV-approved clinic for drivers ordered by a court or the DMV, or who choose to attend voluntarily. Completing the clinic does not automatically remove points or dismiss a ticket. Any safe-driving point credit depends on eligibility; court-ordered students should bring requested documentation and follow the court's instructions.

Question 4

What is the Re-Examination Course?

Accepted Answer

Virginia has separate requirements after repeated knowledge-test and road-skills-test failures. The 8-hour Driver's Manual Course may apply after three general knowledge-test failures; the road-skills pathway requires behind-the-wheel training. Check the relevant course page and DMV guidance.

Question 5

What is the 3-Times Permit Failure course?

Accepted Answer

The 8-hour Driver's Manual course is the required next step for some people after three knowledge-test failures, but it is not the rule for everyone. Age and prior classroom Driver Education determine which course applies; confirm with the DMV before enrolling.

Question 6

Can I take courses if I don't live in Virginia?

Accepted Answer

Our online courses are available to non-Virginia residents required by the VA DMV or courts. Our in-person courses are limited to Northern Virginia service areas.

Question 7

How do I enroll?

Accepted Answer

Browse our courses and complete the enrollment form on the course page, or call 1(844) 822-5742. Payment is required at time of registration.

Question 8

How quickly can I start?

Accepted Answer

Online courses: immediately after registration and payment. In-person: scheduling within a few days of registration depending on availability.

Question 9

What is the cancellation and no-show policy for driving sessions?

Accepted Answer

Students must provide at least one hour's notice before the scheduled start time to cancel a session. If a student has not arrived within 15 minutes after the scheduled start time, the session will be treated as a no-show and cancelled without a refund. A session cancelled after the scheduled start time, after the instructor has arrived at the designated pick-up location, is also cancelled without a refund.

Question 10

Can a cancelled student session be replaced?

Accepted Answer

For Under-18 Behind-the-Wheel and Adult Waiver licensing courses, a replacement session may be scheduled for a later date if availability permits. An additional fee equal to the per-session cost applies, calculated as the course price divided by the total number of sessions. For other in-person driving training courses, a student-cancelled session may or may not be replaced depending on availability, and replacement is not guaranteed.

Question 11

What happens if the school cancels my driving session?

Accepted Answer

For licensing courses, the school will offer and arrange a replacement session to support required course completion. For in-person driving training courses, the student may accept the replacement session or request a refund for the missed session.

Question 12

What are Virginia's requirements for a teen driver's license?

Accepted Answer

Teens must hold a learner's permit for at least 9 months, complete 45 hours of supervised driving (15 at night), pass a driver education course, and pass the DMV road skills test.

Question 13

What is the Virginia GDL (Graduated Driver Licensing) program?

Accepted Answer

Virginia's GDL program has three stages: Learner's Permit, Restricted License, and Full License. Restrictions include curfews and passenger limits during the restricted stage.

Question 14

How many times can I fail the VA DMV knowledge test?

Accepted Answer

After three knowledge-test failures, Virginia DMV requirements depend on age and prior classroom Driver Education. Some applicants must complete the 36-session Driver Education course; others must take the 8-hour Driver's Manual course. Check the DMV's current three-failure guidance before retesting.

Question 15

What happens if I fail the Virginia road-skills test three times?

Accepted Answer

After three unsuccessful road-skills tests, Virginia DMV requires certain applicants to complete the behind-the-wheel component of driver education before another attempt. This rule is different from the knowledge-test rule; check the DMV's retesting requirements for your situation.

Question 16

How do adult first-time license rules change on January 1, 2027?

Accepted Answer

Virginia DMV's adult first-license requirements vary by application date. A change to how driver-education certificates are submitted takes effect January 1, 2027. Check the live DMV requirements before choosing a course or applying, because eligibility depends on your situation and application date.

Question 17

What is a driver improvement point reduction clinic?

Accepted Answer

Completing a clinic does not automatically remove demerit points or guarantee a point award. Any safe-driving point credit depends on Virginia DMV eligibility; for court-ordered attendance, follow the court's instructions and provide any requested documentation.

Question 18

When is a driver improvement clinic required?

Accepted Answer

A clinic is required when a court or the DMV orders one. Eligible drivers may choose to attend voluntarily, but that does not guarantee a point award or change a separate court requirement.

Question 19

What is Virginia's distracted driving law?

Accepted Answer

Virginia law prohibits holding a handheld personal communications device while driving. Fines start at $125 for first offense and $250 for subsequent offenses.

Question 20

What are Virginia's speed limit laws?

Accepted Answer

Default speed limits: 25 mph in business/residential areas, 35 mph in other areas, 55 mph on highways. School zones and work zones have specific restrictions.

Question 21

What happens if I get too many points on my VA license?

Accepted Answer

VA DMV sends warnings at 8, 12, and 18 points. At 18 points in 12 months, your license may be suspended.

Question 22

How long is Virginia's online Driver Improvement Clinic?

Accepted Answer

Virginia's online Driver Improvement Clinic requires at least eight hours of instruction. The DMV requires online clinics to be completed through a DMV-licensed online clinic provider.

Question 23

How many safe-driving points can I receive?

Accepted Answer

An eligible driver may receive up to five safe-driving points once every 24 months. A driver cannot accumulate more than five safe-driving points on their record. If a court ordered the clinic, the court decides whether points are awarded; DMV requires court documentation to be provided to the clinic provider before it can award points.

Question 24

Can a non-Virginia resident take this clinic?

Accepted Answer

If you live outside Virginia but a Virginia court or the DMV directed you to take a clinic, contact that authority and the clinic provider before enrolling. Confirm that the online course meets your requirement. A Virginia clinic does not guarantee point credit or acceptance in another state's system.

Question 25

What if a court ordered me to take the clinic?

Accepted Answer

Before enrolling, confirm that the court accepts an online clinic and ask whether it requires a specific provider or paperwork. The court determines whether safe-driving points will be awarded. If point credit is expected, ask what court documentation the provider needs before completion.

Question 26

How do the online final exam and identity checks work?

Accepted Answer

The final exam must be taken online through the clinic provider you registered with. DMV requires identity verification throughout the course and before the final exam. The final may be taken only once per business day; paper testing is not allowed.

Question 27

What happens if I fail the final exam?

Accepted Answer

You may take the final no more than once per business day. Follow the course provider's instructions for a later attempt; the clinic is not complete until you pass all required course and exam steps.

Question 28

When will my certificate be issued and DMV notified?

Accepted Answer

Virginia requires online clinic providers to issue the standardized completion certificate electronically and report successful completion to DMV within 24 hours. Keep a copy of your certificate and follow any additional court instructions.

Question 29

What does the clinic cover?

Accepted Answer

The clinic provides defensive-driving and traffic-safety instruction. The exact lessons and sequence depend on the course provider; completing the clinic does not guarantee a particular court or insurance result.

Question 30

Can my insurance company give me a discount?

Accepted Answer

Some insurers may offer a benefit after a defensive-driving course, but eligibility and discounts vary by insurer and driver. Ask your insurer before enrolling; a clinic does not guarantee a discount.

Question 31

Is this the course required after three failed knowledge tests?

Accepted Answer

No. A Driver Improvement Clinic is separate from the 8-hour Driver's Manual Course that may apply after certain knowledge-test failures. Check the Virginia DMV's three-failure guidance to identify your requirement.

Question 32

What is the 8-hour Driver's Manual Course for?

Accepted Answer

It is based on the Virginia Driver's Manual and may meet the additional training requirement after certain failures of the general knowledge exam. A Driver Improvement Clinic does not satisfy this requirement. The 8-hour course is not the requirement for three failed road-skills tests.

Question 33

Who can use the course after three failed knowledge tests?

Accepted Answer

The route depends on age and prior driver education. Applicants age 18 or older may take the 8-hour course in person or online; DMV requires the completion date to be after the third failure and the certificate to be provided to DMV before retaking the test. For applicants under 18, eligibility depends on whether the classroom component of driver education was completed before or after the third failure.

Question 34

What are the rules for students under 18?

Accepted Answer

If the 36-session classroom component was completed after the third failure, DMV says its completion certificate may satisfy the requirement. If it was completed before the third failure, the student may take the 8-hour course and must send proof of prior completion to the school before enrollment. Alpha's enrollment policy also requires under-18 students to email that proof before enrolling.

Question 35

Does this course help after three failed road-skills tests?

Accepted Answer

No. The Driver's Manual Course applies to qualifying knowledge-test failures. After three failed road-skills tests, DMV requires the behind-the-wheel component: fourteen 50-minute driving periods, with no observation or road-skills test required as part of that component.

Question 36

How do I check whether an online course is eligible?

Accepted Answer

DMV says the online Driver's Manual Course for applicants age 18 or older must be completed through a DMV-licensed online driver training school or VADETS. Check the official DMV school directory and confirm the course meets your requirement before enrolling.

Question 37

Does completing the course guarantee I will pass or get a permit?

Accepted Answer

No. You must provide the completion certificate to DMV, meet all other requirements that apply to you, and pass the knowledge exam. Course completion does not guarantee a permit or license.

Question 38

What should I do after completing the course?

Accepted Answer

Follow the course provider's instructions for your completion certificate, then provide the required proof to DMV before retaking the knowledge exam. You still need to meet the other requirements that apply to you and pass the exam.

Question 39

How long is Virginia's online driver-education classroom course?

Accepted Answer

Virginia defines the classroom component as 36 sessions of 50 minutes each, equivalent to 30 hours. The full driver-education program also has separate in-car and road-skills requirements.

Question 40

Who may take driver education online?

Accepted Answer

Virginia allows people of all ages to choose online driver education through a DMV-licensed online driver training school. Before enrolling, verify that the school and its in-person final-exam test site are listed by DMV.

Question 41

Can I take the online-course final exam at home?

Accepted Answer

No. The online classroom course has a required in-person final exam at a scheduled test site. The exam may be taken only once per business day. This is separate from the later road-skills examination in the behind-the-wheel program.

Question 42

What should I bring to the in-person final exam?

Accepted Answer

DMV requires photo identification and proof that you completed the online course. Students under 18 must also bring signed parental consent and proof of the 90-minute Parent-Teen component if it applies to them. The course school provides the computer for testing.

Question 43

What happens after I pass the online-course final exam?

Accepted Answer

Passing the in-person exam completes the test step for the online classroom course. Follow your school’s instructions for completion documents and next steps. The full driver-education program has a separate behind-the-wheel phase and road-skills assessment.

Question 44

Does online driver education include behind-the-wheel training?

Accepted Answer

No. The classroom course and behind-the-wheel component are separate. Virginia's full program includes seven 50-minute driving sessions, seven 50-minute observation sessions, and a road-skills examination.

Question 45

What is the Parent-Teen Class requirement?

Accepted Answer

Students under 18 generally have a 90-minute Parent-Teen component. In Planning District 8, the student and a parent or guardian must complete it in person. DMV lists exemptions and additional details; check its current rules for your situation.

Question 46

What else do Virginia teens need before getting a license?

Accepted Answer

In addition to driver education, Virginia residents under 18 generally must hold a learner's permit for at least nine months and document 45 hours of supervised driving, including 15 hours after sunset. Check current DMV requirements before applying.

Question 47

Do adult driver-education requirements vary?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Requirements depend on age and prior license history. DMV has additional requirements for first-time applicants ages 18 through 20 starting January 1, 2027; review the current DMV guidance before enrolling.

Question 48

Does the course automatically qualify me for a license in Virginia or another state?

Accepted Answer

No. A license depends on all requirements that apply to your age and driving history. If you live outside Virginia, confirm with your home state's licensing authority that it will accept the course before enrolling.

Question 49

Where is the in-person final exam?

Accepted Answer

The current course information lists the test site at 44075 Pipeline Plaza, Suite 115, Ashburn, VA 20147. Exam dates are scheduled; confirm the provider and test site in the DMV directory and follow the school's current scheduling instructions.

Question 50

Does Alpha's online course include the Parent-Teen Class?

Accepted Answer

The course information says the 90-minute Parent-Teen Class is included for students under 18. Virginia requirements and exemptions vary; in Planning District 8, the student and a parent or guardian generally complete it in person. Check current DMV rules for your situation.

Question 51

What is the 4-hour RADEP course?

Accepted Answer

RADEP means Reckless and Aggressive Driving Education Program. The 4-hour program focuses on safer driving choices and risks associated with reckless or aggressive driving. It is different from a Driver Improvement Clinic and the 8-hour Driver's Manual Course.

Question 52

Who should take the 4-hour course?

Accepted Answer

It may fit a court or other authority requirement that specifically calls for a 4-hour reckless or aggressive driving education program. Requirements vary by case. Read your order and confirm the course length, format, provider, deadline, and proof instructions with the authority before enrolling.

Question 53

What topics does the 4-hour course cover?

Accepted Answer

The course information describes safety concepts such as risky driving behavior, aggressive driving, speed and following-distance risks, defensive-driving principles, emotions, stress, awareness, and sharing the road. The exact lessons and sequence may vary by provider.

Question 54

How does the online 4-hour course work?

Accepted Answer

After registration, course access is provided through the student dashboard when ready. Complete the required four hours and any assessment or other steps required by the provider. Follow the provider's instructions for completion documentation.

Question 55

Does completion guarantee court acceptance or a reduced charge?

Accepted Answer

No. Completion does not guarantee that a court will accept the course, dismiss or reduce a charge, lower a fine or sentence, remove points, or produce any other legal outcome. The court or other authority decides what satisfies your case.

Question 56

Is the 4-hour course interchangeable with the 12-hour RADEP or Driver Improvement Clinic?

Accepted Answer

No. Course lengths and program types are not interchangeable. Register only for the program that matches your order or official requirement. A Driver Improvement Clinic and the Driver's Manual Course serve different purposes.

Question 57

How do I submit proof after finishing?

Accepted Answer

Keep the completion documentation and follow the specific court or authority instructions for submitting it. Ask the authority about deadlines, format, and whether the provider must send documentation directly.

Question 58

What if my court date or deadline is coming up soon?

Accepted Answer

Follow the deadline in your court order and contact the court or your attorney to confirm when proof must be received. Leave enough time to complete the course, receive the documentation, and submit it. Registering for a course does not change a court date or extend a deadline.

Question 59

What is the 12-hour RADEP course?

Accepted Answer

RADEP means Reckless and Aggressive Driving Education Program. The 12-hour program provides education about reckless and aggressive driving behavior, risk awareness, and safer decision-making. It is different from a Driver Improvement Clinic and the 8-hour Driver's Manual Course.

Question 60

Who should take the 12-hour course?

Accepted Answer

It may fit a court or other authority requirement that specifically calls for a 12-hour reckless or aggressive driving education program. Requirements vary by case. Confirm the course type, length, format, provider, deadline, and proof instructions with the authority before enrolling.

Question 61

Is the 12-hour course self-paced?

Accepted Answer

The course information describes online access as self-paced and available through the student dashboard when ready. You must complete the full 12 hours and any assessment or other provider requirements; access does not guarantee completion by a particular date or in one sitting.

Question 62

What happens after I complete the course?

Accepted Answer

Completion documentation is provided according to the course provider's process. Keep it and submit it only as directed by the court or other authority. Ask the authority whether it requires a specific document, delivery method, or deadline.

Question 63

Does completion guarantee court acceptance or a legal result?

Accepted Answer

No. Completion does not guarantee acceptance, dismissal or reduction of a charge, a lower fine or sentence, point removal, or another legal outcome. The court or other authority decides how completion affects an individual case.

Question 64

Is the 12-hour course interchangeable with the 4-hour RADEP or Driver Improvement Clinic?
