What Is a Virginia Driver Improvement Clinic? (And Do You Need One?)

A Virginia Driver Improvement Clinic is an eight-hour course covering defensive driving and traffic safety. People may take one because a court or DMV directed them to, to seek safe-driving points, or for an insurance-related reason. Those purposes are not interchangeable, so identify your reason before registering.

First, identify who sent you to the clinic

• Court required: Read the order and ask the court whether it accepts the format you plan to take. If the court is to award safe-driving points, DMV requires supporting court documentation.
• DMV required: Follow the deadline and course instructions in the DMV notice. DMV says a required clinic must be completed within 90 days; missing the deadline can suspend driving privileges.
• Voluntary or insurance-related: Check with your insurer about discounts before paying. A clinic taken for an insurance discount does not also award safe-driving points.

Understand what the course can—and cannot—do

A completed clinic may award five safe-driving points once every 24 months, subject to DMV rules and the reason for attendance. A court decides whether points are awarded for a court-required course. Safe-driving points do not erase a ticket or automatically remove demerit points.

Check the course format and provider

Virginia permits online and in-person clinics. For an online course, the course and final exam must be provided by a DMV-licensed online clinic provider; an in-person course has an in-person final exam. Before enrolling, use the DMV clinic directory and confirm that the court or DMV accepts the specific provider and format.

1. Read the court order, DMV notice, or insurer instructions.
2. Tell the clinic why you are attending.
3. Ask what identification and court documents are required.
4. Confirm the course format, final-exam format, deadline, and current total cost.
5. Keep the completion confirmation and check that DMV receives the report.
